Beginner Dog Training: Puppy Training, Dog Care, and My Journey
Hello and welcome to my blog! My name is Rory and I’m thrilled to share my new adventure with you. After retiring, I found myself missing the companionship of my old dog, who sadly passed away in June last year. To ease that loss, I welcomed a new puppy into my home last December — my fourth dog, but the very first one I’ll be training myself.
This blog is about my journey through puppy training, and as of now, ongoing dog training, written in a way that’s friendly, practical, and hopefully both supportive and informative for both new and experienced pet owners.
Puppy Training for Beginners
Bringing home a puppy is exciting, but it also comes with challenges. Potty training, learning basic commands, and setting boundaries, I’ve learned, all take time and patience. I realised early on that training isn’t about strict rules — it’s about teaching your puppy how to live happily and safely alongside your family.
Here you’ll find:
- Step-by-step puppy training tips that I learned which are simple and effective.
- Guidance on how to start with commands like sit, stay, and come.
- Advice on tackling common puppy problems such as nipping, chewing, and jumping.
There is a vast amount of dog training information out there and you need to find out what works for you and your relationship with your dog. I only share what worked for me.
By sharing my own experiences, I hope to make training less intimidating and more rewarding for you and your pup.
Dog Training Beyond Puppyhood
Training doesn’t stop once your puppy grows up. Dog training for older dogs keeps them mentally sharp, physically active, and socially well-behaved. Whether you’ve just brought home a rescue dog or you want to refresh your pet’s skills, consistent training is the key.
I’ll also write about:
- Reinforcing good behaviour in adolescent and adult dogs.
- Fun training games to keep dogs engaged.
- How to overcome common challenges like leash pulling or poor recall.
Training is really about communication — and it’s never too late to start.
Essential Dog Care
A happy, healthy dog needs more than training. Dog care covers their physical and emotional wellbeing. On this blog, you’ll also find practical guides on:
- Feeding and nutrition: choosing the right puppy food and adult diets.
- Exercise and play: making walks, fetch, and games part of daily life.
- Health and grooming: from vaccinations and vet check-ups to brushing coats and trimming nails.
- Safe home environment: puppy-proofing your house and setting up routines.
Good care helps create the foundation for effective training — because a well-cared-for dog is more confident, relaxed, and ready to learn.
Learning Together
I’m not claiming to be an expert far from it in fact. I’m simply a new puppy owner learning as I go. That’s what makes this blog unique. You’ll get to follow my real journey — the ups, the downs, and everything in between.
Expect honest updates:
- The chaos of house training.
- The joy of mastering a new command.
- The challenges of keeping consistency.
- The small wins that make it all worthwhile.
This blog is about learning together — with a focus on practical dog care tips and beginner-friendly training methods.

If you’re a first-time puppy owner, you’ll find step-by-step guides and reassurance. If you’re an experienced dog owner, you may find fresh training ideas or simply enjoy sharing the journey.
I want this space to feel like a friendly chat, not a lecture. Dogs connect us, and this blog is here to build a community of people who love, train, and care for their dogs.

Closing Thoughts
Starting this blog is as much about sharing as it is about learning. After retiring, losing my dog, and bringing a new puppy home, I wanted to create a place where I could document this new chapter — and hopefully help others at the same time. More for my mental health than anything else;
So whether you’re searching for puppy training tips, looking for dog care advice, or simply want to follow along with a fellow dog lover’s story, you’re in the right place.
Let’s celebrate the ups and downs of life with dogs — because every dog deserves our best.
A word of warning…. I’ve never blogged before, this is a first and helps me fill my days.
